The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak is a novel about a teenage girl, Ada, trying to uncover her family’s painful past. Her parents met when they were young, in a divided postcolonial Cyprus, one Greek and Christian, the other Turkish and Muslim. They are separated by the war but end up back together as migrants in London. After Ada’s mother dies, she and her father begin to talk and find answers to the emotional price her family has paid through the years.
